Awdal: A Hidden Somali Gem

Awdal: A Hidden Somali Gem

In the most northwestern region of the Somali horn lies Awdal — a region blossoming with opportunity, life, culture, and spirit. With Djibouti to the north, Ethiopia to the west, and the Gulf of Aden to the east, the Awdal region is marked by its pillars of community and beauty. From a gorgeous coastline debuting endless views of ocean waters to the mountainous terrain lined with towering trees and pillow-like sand dunes surrounding some communities, Awdal experiences a diverse range of landscapes. So, what does it mean to be “a hidden Somali gem?” Awdal represents this, a life formerly in the shadows ready to enter the world and participate in global affairs. This is where the traditional meets the modern. Where authentic Somali culture unveils itself as an asset — as a way to sustainably create change for the people, the land, and the region as a whole.

Blessed with abundant natural resources, the region not only holds gems, but is a gem itself. What makes Awdal special? As a region that traditionally prides itself in higher education, Awdal is home to a huge population of educated young people itching to make a difference in their communities. Divided into four main districts, the Awdal region is home to many different industries such as mineral mining, agriculture, fishing, and salt mining. Baki, Borama, Zeila, and Lughaya are all vibrant districts with huge economic potential, working to blend together traditional and modern practices to advance the economy in environmentally friendly ways.

Awdal not only revels in a rich history, but a rich present. Rich in life and opportunity. While once hidden, this gem is no longer invisible with Somalis and others from far and wide recognizing all the region has to offer for Awdalians and the rest of the world. Some believe the Horn is the cradle of Somali people, some believe it is the cradle of all humanity. Regardless of what’s true or false, the reality lies in the narrative. A story that speaks of a people rich in the past, hopeful for a similar future.
